Treasury Exempts UK, NZ From Foreign Investment Screening

US

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFUIS), a branch of the Treasury Dep't, has extended the exemption for the UK and New Zealand regarding foreign investment screening, meaning that all members of the 'Five Eyes' intel-sharing alliance (Australia, Canada, NZ, UK, US) are exempt from the jurisdiction of the CFUIS.

  • Assistant Secretary for Investment Security Paul Rosen stated that "The United States thoroughly reviews foreign investment for national security risks, and it is critical that our allies also identify and address risks from malign foreign investment. Today’s actions reflect that our Five Eye allies have all stood up and implemented their own robust foreign investment screening programs."
  • For the UK, which introduced a new foreign investment screening law in 2022, and New Zealand - which counts China as its largest trading partner - the ruling comes as a seal of approval from Washington, D.C., regarding these nations' efforts to limit Chinese investment in their economies.
