Treasury Says Eskom Exemption Won't Stoke Corruption

  • National Treasury said that Eskom is still expected to prevent irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure, even after being granted an exemption from reporting such spending in its financial statements. The utility still needs to report on irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure in its annual reports. The Treasury said that the exemption was intended to give Eskom additional time to comply with new reporting regulations and to avoid harming its credit rating.
  • Business Leadership South Africa said that the country should announce an overhaul of its visa regime, which is "one of the major sources of a lack of confidence in South Africa's investment case."
  • The Daily Maverick circulated a source report noting that South Africa refused to grant export permits for artillery ammunition sales to Poland, apparently out of concern over its diplomatic relations with Russia.
