CANADA

PM Justin Trudeau has launched a verbal broadside against the Trump administration in the US amid the imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods. Speaking in a press conference, Trudeau criticised the US administration and Trump directly. Starting off by addressing the American people Trudeau says that due to the tariffs, markets are down and inflation will "rise dramatically", adding, "Your gov't has chosen to do this to you"

  • Implies that Trump is disingenuous on the reasons for tariffs on Canada and Mexico after saying on 3 March that there is 'no room left' for a deal, with the comments underlying "very clearly what I think a lot of us have suspected for a long time: that these tariffs are not specifically about fentanyl".
  • Trudeau confirms that Canada will implement 25% tariffs on CAD155B of US goods.
  • Addressing Trump directly, Trudeau says that Trump is "a very smart guy" but that the imposition of tariffs "is a very dumb thing to do."
  • Regarding Trump's post on Truth Social regarding access to Canada for US banks, Trudeau says it "doesn't make any sense" as 16 US banks hold ~CAD113B of Canadian assets.
  • Trudeau claims that Trump's banking comments and tariffs are intentionally aimed at collapsing the Canadian economy "because that'll make it easier to annex us."
