Former Republican US Senator for Georgia David Perdue announced his bid for the state’s governorship on 6 December and a Fox 5 Atlanta/Insider Advantage poll reports that Trump’s endorsement has had the immediate impact of the eliminating a 19-point primary polling gap to moderate incumbent Brian Kemp.
- Georgia is certain to be a key battleground state in the upcoming 2022 Midterms and moderate Republicans have questioned the wisdom of Trump’s intervention in a gubernatorial race which will create a Republican primary with a Republican incumbent office. This presents a headache for Republicans as similar in-party squabbling in Georgia contributed towards Republicans lose control of the Senate in 2020.
- Trump’s intervention has the potential to derail Brian Kemp’s re-election campaign and bolster the campaign of Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams as the political divide between Trump supporters and moderates widens within the Republican party.
- It seems certain that Trump’s snub of Kemp, who refused Trump’s demands to seek to overturn Georgia’s 2020 presidential election result, will lead to another bitter contest in Georgia and one to keep an eye on ahead of the 2022 election season.
