Former President Donald Trump’s barnstorming month of fundraising has closed the campaign financing gap President Biden has enjoyed for most of the year. Politico notes the numbers for Trump and Biden:
- $141 million: amount raised by Trump and the RNC in May
- $81 million: amount raised by Biden and the DNC in May
- $116.5 million: amount of cash on hand for the Trump campaign at the start of June
- $91.6 million: amount of cash on hand for the Biden campaign at the start of June
The Washington Post reports the flood of donations to Trump following his Manhattan criminal conviction - including $70 million raised online in the first 48 hours after the verdict, per his campaign - “has the potential to dramatically reshape the presidential race.”
- The headline donation for Trump: USD$50 million from transportation executive Timothy Mellon on the day after Trump was convicted in New York – among the largest single donations in US elections history, according to the New York Times.
- The Times notes: “The donation’s impact on the 2024 race is expected to be felt almost immediately. Within days of the contribution, the pro-Trump super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., said in a memo that it would begin reserving $100 million in advertising through Labor Day.”
- Biden’s campaign has also raked in some significant donations, the largest being USD$20 million from former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
