Speaking to Fox News US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff says that he "thinks we can get Qatar on board for normalisation" with Israel. The Abraham Accords that saw the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco normalise relations with Israel were seen as one of the major foreign policy achievements of the first Trump administration.
- Witkoff: "The discussion about normalising relations between Israel and the countries of the region is the beginning of the end of the war and also means that the entire area will be financially viable because there will no longer be a concern about missile fire from the Houthis or Hezbollah. This will be significant for Israel and the region. A condition for normalisation was a ceasefire, and we achieved that. I believe all the countries in the area are on the agenda."
- Qatar was one of the two main MENA mediators, alongside Egypt, in the Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks. It has long held closer relations with Iran than other GCC states.
- Trump was asked on 21 Jan on when an Israel-Saudi normalisation deal might be signed, replying "soon". Work towards the prospect of Saudi Arabia normalising relations with Israel was seen as one of the factors behind the timing of Hamas launching its attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023.
