Trump's VP Shortlist Shrinks, Gov. Burgum And Sen. Scott Favourites

US

Former President Donald Trump’s shortlist for his Vice President pick appears to be shortening after reports that he has requested documents for vetting eight potential candidates.

  • Per reporting, the shortlist includes: Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH), North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), former HUD Secretary Ben Carson, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), and Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK).
  • Politico reports: “While no one knows for sure who the lucky Republican will be, the speculation from some on the outside seems to be that Burgum leads the pack. The former presidential candidate and wealthy businessman has helped with fundraising and donor outreach — something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Trump.”
  • Comes as Biden continues to poll well below his 2020 benchmark with minority voters and Scott launches a USD$14 million PAC aimed at drawing Black and Hispanic voters in battleground states.
  • Alex Conant, a former campaign manager for Senator Rubio, said on the prospect of Scott swaying Black voters: “Obviously, it’s a must win constituency for Biden. To the extent that [Scott] can cleave votes, it’s a really big deal. Politically, it makes [Scott] a very interesting VP pick.”
  • Betting markets lean slightly towards Scott as the favourite, likely taking into account the upside benefits of the strategy to capitalise on President Biden’s weakness amongst Black voters.
