The White House press pool has confirmed that President Donald Trump will sign executive orders at 13:00 ET 18:00 GMT, expected to include a new 25% on steel and aluminium.
- NYT notes that Trump is, "also eyeing broad tariffs on Europe, Taiwan and others, as well as on industries and key commodities like copper, pharmaceuticals and semiconductors."
- Director of the White House NEC, Kevin Hassett, told CNBC this morning that Trump, "will act to stop waivers on steel at a time of his own choosing", adding Trump, "wants to fight inflation by increasing labor supply and lowering aggregate demand."
- Similarly to last week, when he opened the door to negotiations which eventually led to a pause in Mexico/Canada tariffs, Hassett said: "If they go down, we'll go down."
- Hasset also noted that India has "enormously high tariffs," suggesting that Trump could tease hardline measures on New Delhi days before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Washington for a meeting with Trump.
- FT notes: "Canada, China and Mexico were in 2023 the biggest exporters to the US of steel and aluminium products, but the proposed levies would potentially ensnare countries from Brazil to Germany to South Korea."
- Reuters reports the Brazilian government is planning retaliatory tariffs on US tech companies if Trump follows through with steel tariffs.
- Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will hold a call with Trump on Tuesday to make the case for Australia to avoid metals tariffs.
