US DATA: U.S. building permits for privately-owned housing units dropped -20.8%
in April to 1.074 million, the lowest level since March 2014 when the number was
1.062 million. This marks a y/y drop of -19.2 in building permits but is still
higher than the 1.000 million building permits expected by markets, according to
BBG estimates. Housing starts fell -30.2% m/m to 0.891 million, the lowest level
since February 2015 when the number was 0.888 million. Markets had expected
0.923 million housing starts in April. The release by the Census Bureau this
morning also featured a host of revisions, with unadjusted building permit
estimates being revised from January to December 2019, among other data
revisions extending back to January 2014.
