POWER: UK Battery Storage Queue Hits 61GW, Far Exceeding Grid Capacity Needs
POWER
The queue for BESS seeking grid connections by 2030 in the UK has reached around 61GW – more than double the grid’s required capacity at 27GW, with the 2035 queue exceeding targets by fourfold, according to Cornwall Insights.
- The queue is anticipated to grow to 129GW by 2035 – over four times the projected 29GW requirement (see chart).
- The delay is due to the slow expansion of grid connections contrasts with rapid BESS development, leading to project delays beyond 2035.
- And many projects remain in limbo, while speculative projects crowd the queue, Cornwall added.
- However, some BESS projects will receive priority for grid connection, including 14GW secured through capacity market contracts.
- While 4.5GW is already contracted to connect by 2026 and 21.5GW has obtained planning consent or is currently under construction.
- Separately, the UK will launch its Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP), expected in 2026, and will set post-2035 capacity targets.
- And the UK proposed a progression commitment fee to streamline its electricity connections queue, ensuring only viable projects move forward, NESO said on 10 February.
But by 2050, BESS capacity is projected at 29-36GW, indicating limited growth beyond 2035, Cornwall added.
