UK FM Cameron Calls On Counterparts To Pressure Spkr Johnson On Ukraine

NATO

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron has urged his European counterparts to pressure US House Speaker Mike Johnson R-LA to approve new military aid for Ukraine.

  • Cameron said at a presser to conclude a two-day NATO foreign ministerial in Brussels: “Crucially, we need to get on the phone, or in my case go in person to see Speaker Johnson in the House of Representatives to get that supplemental through.”
  • Cameron added: “I think that European foreign ministers have a real role to play in that. Congress does listen to what others say and what America is capable of doing. I think the thing that could most change the narrative about Ukraine [would be] $60 billion flowing from U.S. to Ukraine.”
  • Johnson has said he wants to bring some form of amended Ukraine package to the floor when the House returns from recess next week. Most likely a vote will come by mid-April, at the earliest.
  • However, pressure from conservative House Republicans, who are vehemently opposed to considering new aid without first addressing concerns over border security, is threatening to derail Johnson's effort, as outlined in earlier bullet at 14:10 GMT.
