UK Foreign Sec: 'If Russia Invades Ukraine NS II Should Not Go Ahead'

Speaking to Sky News after a meeting in Brussels with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss states that should Russia invade Ukraine, then the Nord Stream II gas pipeline from Russia to Germany should be halted.

  • German gov't risks a major falling out not only with Ukraine but Russia hawks in NATO such as US and UK over its continued support for the Nord Stream II pipeline. Ukraine calling for it to halt, Greens in German gov't not keen on it either. Could prove major headache for Chancellor Scholz.
  • Truss states that NATO members must be 'prepared for any eventuality' when it comes to the Ukraine situation.
  • NATO spox tweets: "NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg and UK Foreign Secretary Truss discussed Russia’s military build-up in/around Ukraine & implications for European security. He thanked her for UK's contributions to NATO collective defence & strong support to our partner Ukraine."
  • Truss also speaks on a different topic, Brexit. Says that finding a deal on the Northern Ireland protocol quickly is paramount, and that the situation in NI at present is 'quite challenging'.
