POWER: UK Grid Upgrades Urgent as Industrial Sites Face Constraints

POWER

The UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) warns that without urgent grid upgrades, 75% of large industrial sites in Great Britain could face electricity constraints by 2040, potentially hindering decarbonisation efforts and industrial growth, according to a report by UKERC, cited by Utility Week.

  • By 2030, 42% of large industrial sites could experience constraints without additional investment, increasing to 75% by 2040 and 77% by 2050.
  • Most constraints (75%) stem from increased demand on local substations due to electric vehicles and heat pumps, while the remainder arise from industrial sites’ own growing electricity needs.
  • Of the 71GW in additional capacity needed to ease network constraints by 2050, industrial sites will require 8GW as they transition to greater electricity use, including for hydrogen production.
  • In the short term, most regions in the UK will have enough capacity, but by 2050, Yorkshire and Humberside will be the only areas without industrial constraints due to their existing grid space.
  • The report calls for industrial electricity demand to be incorporated into regional and strategic spatial energy plans.
