UK Plans New Scottish Nuclear Plant

The UK government is planning to build a new nuclear unit in Scotland, according to Scottish Secretary Alister Jack, cited by BBC.

  • The UK government has committed to developing larger-scale nuclear plants south of the border and building smaller modular reactors. Eight more nuclear reactors could be approved on existing sites.
  • But the Scottish government has rejected calls to end an effective ban on new nuclear power stations.
  • Scotland's last nuclear power plant - at Torness in East Lothian - will be shut down by 2028.
  • The UK labour party leader set out 'Six Pledges' As Pre-Election Manoeuvring Begins, of which include, setting up a publicly owned clean power firm called 'Great British Energy'.
