GILT SUMMARY: UK PM Theresa May and European Commission President Jean-Claude
Junker have indicated that progress is being made on Brexit talks. However, any
eventual agreement will still struggle to secure sufficient support in
Westminster.
- Irish PM Leo Varadkar has stated that he is confident that the UK will not
leave the EU without a deal.
- Gilts have weakened a touch since mid-morning with yields ~1-2.5bp higher on
the day. Current yield levels: 2-year 0.759%, 10-year 1.176%, 30-year 1.707%.
The curve is marginally steeper on the day.
- The Mar-19 gilt future trades at 124.0 near the bottom of the day's range.
- Inflation breakevens have taken a small leg lower with the 5-year benchmark
trading down to 3.055% from a high of 3.069%.
- Cable continues to hold firm above 1.30, while equities have seen only minimal
support from the positive shift in the US-China trade dispute.
- Short sterling futures are 0.5-2.0 ticks higher with the strip steepening
slightly on the back of greens/blues underperforming.
