Ukraine Aid Hangs In Balance As Republicans Line Up Against Border Bill

US

The future of continued aid to Ukraine appear even more uncertain after a raft of rank-and-file Republicans lawmakers have issued statements in opposition to the US-Mexico border security bill, unveiled yesterday by Senate negotiators.

  • Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) said a short time ago: “Now that I have seen text, I have questions and serious concerns” - a pivot from his position ahead of the bill's release, reflecting a new reality today that the contents of the bill have failed to overcome opposition led by former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
  • A statement from Rep Barry Moore (R-AL) articulates the position many Congressional Republicans intend to stake out: "President Biden has the authority to enforce immigration laws already on the books. He also has the authority to close the border at any time..."
  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told MSNBC this morning: “I say to Speaker Johnson:... Do. The right. Thing! You know what the right thing to do is. You know we need to fix our border.”
  • Chad Pegram at Fox News reports that, "Senate Republicans will meet tonight to discuss border bill," adding that "there is a concerted effort now underway to get Republicans to vote against the procedural vote on Wednesday," a move which would "kill the bill outright." If the bill fails to clear the Senate, there is now clear plan B for Ukraine aid.
