Ukraine's Naftogaz Remains in Talks with Azerbaijan Over Gas Transit

NATGAS

Ukraine’s Naftogaz is in talks with Azerbaijan’s Socar for the potential transit of Azerbaijani gas via Ukraine Naftogaz CEO Oleksiy Chernyshov said in an interview this week.

  • Chernyshov reiterated that Ukraine has no intention to renew the current five-year transit deal with Russia’s Gazprom that expires at the end of the year.
  • Chernyshov said two scenarios were possible: a complete stop in flows or a model of alternative suppliers and owners to ensure "certain volumes" can be delivered to customers in the EU.
  • Azerbaijan's president Ilham Aliyev said last month they were in talks with Russia to try and facilitate an extension on the Ukraine-Russia transit deal.
  • Ukraine has spare gas storage capacity available for European suppliers but interest is likely to be limited due to numerous Russian attacks on it this year.
