Ukrainian Officials Brief US DefSec Austin On Battlefield Situation

SECURITY

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's chief of staff Andriy Yermak and Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov briefed US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on the "battlefield situation" in Ukraine during a meeting at the Pentagon today, according to a statement from Zelenskyy's office.

  • The meeting comes as Zelenskyy escalates calls for Washington to relax restrictions on US-supplied weapons to allow Ukraine greater scope to strike targets within Russia, seen by Kyiv as critical to defending against a sustained missile barrage from Russia.
  • Austin told Rustem, per a Pentagon readout: "Alongside some 50 of our allies and partners, the United States will continue to provide the critical capabilities that you need to fight the Kremlin's aggression."
  • Austin notes that he will travel to Ramstein Air Base in Germany next week to convene the Ukraine Defense Contact Group for the 24th time.
