UN SecGen Guterres Welcomes "Growing Consensus" For Humanitarian Pause

Wires carrying comments from United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, speaking at the United Nations in New York, stating that he, "welcomes growing global consensus for a humanitarian pause in Israel-Hamas conflict."

  • Guterres: "Humanitarian system in Gaza facing total collapse with unimaginable consequences for more than two million civilians."
  • Guterres' comments follow a day of speculation that a short-term ceasefire could be under negotiation, mediated by Qatar and/or Egypt.
  • Suggestion of a ceasefire appear to have been little-reflected in the intensity of fighting in Gaza today. AFP reports that Israeli airstrikes conducted in the last few hours have cut communications throughout the Strip.
