SPAIN
SPAIN: Unidas Podemos (UP) leader Iglesias could be offered position of Deputy
Prime Minister in a gov't with PM Pedro Sanchez's Socialists (PSOE).
- Combining PSOE and UP's seats combined gives 155 out of 350, 21 short of the
176 required for a majority.
- If PSOE-UP can get support of all regionalist parties excluding Catalans and
Basque separatists, they would be 4 seats short of a majority.
- Options would then be:
- Bring in Basque separatist EH Bildu (Basque Country Unite). Seen as at the
more extreme end of Basque parties. Its forerunners believed to have links to
terrorist group ETA.
- Bring in Catalan party/parties. Would require major concession from gov't on
independence. UP the most amenable to Catalan independence of any major party,
and gov't could provide Catalonia with greater autonomy/funding to gain support.
- Bring in liberal centrist Citizens. Citizens reduced to 10 seats, may see
supporting a gov't, even one it disagrees with, as less risky than facing
electorate again.
