Unification Min-We'll Try To Resume Talks w/North Next Year

SOUTH KOREA

South Korea's Yonhap reporting comments from Unification Minister Kwon Young-se at his end of year presser stating that Seoul will make efforts next year to resume inter-Korean dialogue w/the North. This comes after a year of heightened tensions between Pyongyang and Seoul as the Kim regime in the DPRK has engaged in its most active year for missile tests on record.

  • Kwon: "The government will seek measures to build trust with North Korea, no matter how trivial and minor it may be, and create conditions so that the North chooses dialogue and communication with the South. We will set the tone for inter-Korean cooperation by allowing civil organizations to resume exchanges on social, cultural and humanitarian areas early next year."
  • While there have been record missile tests this year, there has not yet been a nuclear test in the North. Kwon warned that if this occurred Pyongyang would, "only face deterrence and sanctions that are irrevocable."
