Unions Push Parliament to Act on Failing SOEs, ANC Facing Financial Woes

  • Unions to approach courts to force Parliament to take action on failing SOEs (Denel, SA Express etc), saying it has the power and authority to save state companies that are bleeding money.
    • Numsa says Parliament must play a more active role in overseeing liquidation procedures, and wants the court to force it to do so
    • like hosting public participation processes to determine whether liquidations should go ahead or not.

  • Suspended ANC SG Magashule has been given 48 hrs to apologise for his suspension letter to Ramaphosa or face more punishment
  • ANC Dep SG Duarte says the party isn't broke, but is experiencing 'cash flow problems'.
    • Follows reports that the ANC is unable to pay salaries or has to pay salaries late.
    • Leaked audio suggests the party is looking to reduce staff by 50% to manage its financial problems.
    • Duarte said part of the problem is the new Political Party Funding Act– as some donors were hesitant for it to be made known they support the party financially, as it would be 'bad for business'
