Arrival of US Ambassador To Japan Signals Closer Relationship

Sunday's arrival in Tokyo of US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel demonstrates the increased importance of the US-Japan bilateral relationship in curtailing Chinese influence in the region.

  • The post had been vacant since previous post holder Bill Hagerty's resignation in June 2019.
  • Emanuel is a close ally of US President Joe Biden and former Obama Chief of Staff. His appointment is expected to give Tokyo a 'direct line' to the White House.
  • At his confirmation hearing Emanuel said: '[The Japan-US alliance] is the cornerstone of peace and prosperity in a free and open Indo-Pacific.'
  • And that: 'China aims to conquer through division'.
  • Military cooperation between the US and Japan has been increasing recently and last week Biden and his Japanese counterpart Prime Minister Fumio Kishida shared their first virtual summit.
