US "Fully Expects" Gaza Ceasefire Talks To Continue This Week, Sr Off

Wires carrying comments from a "senior US official" stating: "The United States fully expects Gaza ceasefire talks to continue this week."

  • Reuters notes the official "pushed back" on reporting that said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was “convinced” of Israeli demand that Israeli troops remain in Philadelphi corridor - the primary source of Hamas objections to the so-called bridging proposal" to close gaps to a ceasefire.
  • Adds the official said: “Maximalist statements” like this are not constructive to getting a ceasefire in Gaza and risk the ability of the technical talks to move forward.
  • Official says: "When and if Hamas accepts the bridging proposal, the United States expects there will be additional talks on the implementation details of any ceasefire deal."
  • The next round of talks are expected to get underway tomorrow in Cairo, Egypt or Doha, Qatar, but there has been a notable decline in expectation of a positive outcome with both Hamas and Israel accusing the other of attaching extraneous demands to the deal.
