US Gasoline Spec Change on the Cards

The White House could be set to drop summer gasoline specification requirements to try and reduce US gasoline prices with demand set to keep growing in the coming months and prices already at record highs.

  • US summer gasoline requires components that lower Reid vapor pressure to avoid smog at higher temperatures. By allowing access to a wider range of blending components and volumes, gasoline prices are expected to be softened by the move.
  • Summer gasoline specifications come into effect from June 1 to September 15.
  • The Biden administration has already allowed sales of higher ethanol grade E15 through the summer to try and alleviate pressure on prices at the pump. Sales are normally restricted through the summer months.
