US-Macron State Visit Will Attempt To Mend Fences At Time Of IRA Tension

French President Emmanuel Macron travels to Washington, D.C., on 1 December for the first state visit of the Biden presidency, as the two gov'ts attempt to mend fences in a strained bilateral relationship. It will also act as an opportunity for Macron to lobby on behalf of France and other EU members regarding the US' Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

  • For Macron and the EU, there have been concerns raised that the IRA - a major spending package that in effect offers significant subsidies to US industries - will significantly hinder the ability of EU firms to export to the US. European leaders saying that the US is making it almost impossible for EU to stand up to China and reduce reliance on Chinese tech and supply chains, when the US is undercutting European industries.
  • Longer-running tensions still stem from the creation of the AUKUS alliance in 2021, which saw France unceremoniously ousted from a submarine deal w/Australia. Major anger in Paris over the deal, with Biden likely to have to seek to repair ties in meeting w/Macron.
