US Official-G7 Will Stand Up Against Effort To Change Taiwan Status Quo

(MNI) London - Wires reporting comments from an unnamed senior US State Dep't official speaking from the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Japan. States that the countries 'discussed China and North Korea at length during meetings.' Says that the G7 nations 'agreed that they want to work with China in areas where China is prepared to work with them.'

  • US official: the G7 'agreed that it will stand up against any coercion, any market manipulation, effort to change status quo in the Taiwan strait.'
  • In response to the comments on the Taiwan strait, Chinese Foreign Ministry spox Wang Wenbin stated that: "The Taiwan issue is China's internal affair, and we do not allow any external interference. The true reality of the Taiwan Strait is that Taiwan is part of China and China's sovereignty and territory have never been divided,". Wang blamed, "the separatist activities of the Taiwanese independence fighters with the support of outside forces." for any tensions in the region.
