US Output Could Slow with Shale Drilling Faster than Fracking

OIL

The US DUC count rose for the first time in a year according to the latest EIA drilling report yesterday with shale explorers drilling wells faster than fracking them.

  • The DUC count of the seven key US shale regions rose by nine to 4,522 in March.
  • The data signals that US oil-production growth is slowing as fracking is one of the final steps in bringing new wells online.
  • Drillers can stockpile unfracked wells to time production to benefit from periods of higher prices or easier access to infrastructure.
  • US production is a key market focus with strong recent growth a factor in driving OPEC+ production cuts. The next full OPEC+ meeting to decide future output policy is scheduled to take place on 1 June.
  • US oil output from the main shale-producing regions will rise by 16kb/d to 9.86mb/d in May to a five-month high, according to the EIA’s monthly drilling report.
