US Reviews Venezuelan Sanctions After Machado Ban

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has not held up on his promise of free and fair election by disqualifying the leading opposition candidate Maria Corina Machado from running for the presidential election this year, putting his six-month sanctions waiver program at risk.

  • The US government condemned the court ruling from 26 January by Maduro and Statement Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the decision “is inconsistent with the commitment by Nicolas Maduro’s representatives to hold a competitive Venezuelan presidential election in 2024.”
  • As a result of recent events, “the United States is currently reviewing our Venezuela sanctions policy,” the State Department said.
