US Sanctions on Venezuela "Remain Unchanged": White House

The US has no plans to change its sanctions stance on Venezuela "without constructive steps" from Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to restore democracy.

  • There were signs earlier in the year that strict White House policy could be softening as the world energy markets grappled with tightness that higher Venezuelan volumes could have helped to ease if sanctions were softened.
  • "Our sanctions policy on Venezuela remains unchanged. We will continue to implement and enforce our Venezuela sanctions," White House National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson said on Wednesday.
  • The comments came in response to a WSJ article suggesting the US was set to ease sanctions allowing Chevron to pump more oil there.
