US Sec Of State Blinken Meets With Egypt FM Shoukry

09:00 ET 14:00 BST: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is holding bilateral talks with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry.

  • The US-Egypt relationship has been rocky during the premiership of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi but recent diplomatic summits, including a strengthening of ties with Israel at Negev, has suggested at a thaw in tensions.
  • The Biden administration will be especially keen to shore up Middle Eastern partnerships in light of the faltering Iran JCPOA deal and the ongoing standoff with Saudi Arabia and the UAE over OPEC production.
  • Karim Hagag: 'Western condemnation of its human rights record is causing President Al-Sisi to turn elsewhere for allies.'
  • Egypt is also scheduled to host the 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) in November.
