US State Dept: Reports "Vastly Overstate" ISR/Saudi Normalisation Deal

SECURITY

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller has told reporters that reports of substantial progress made towards Saudi-Israel normalization, “vastly overstate where things stand.”

  • Miller said in response to a question on today's report from the Wall Street Journal suggesting that Saudi and US negotiators have reached a deal on normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia: "I saw that report, I think it vastly overstated the reality of the situation.
  • "We continue to discuss the possibility of normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia with Saudi Arabia and Israel.
  • "The Secretary [of State Antony Blinken] has travelled to the region to discuss this. There are a number of matters under discussion between the three countries and we will continue to work towards that aim, recognizing that its a long and difficult process. I think the reports that we have reached some sort of agreement vastly overstate where things stand."
  • The WSJ reported: "U.S. officials expressed cautious optimism that, in the next nine to 12 months, they can hammer out the finer details of what would be the most momentous Middle East peace deal in a generation."
