US To Announce Long-Range Missiles To Ukr, US Voter Support Weakens

SECURITY

The US is preparing to announce the provision of longer-range rocket systems to Ukraine, for the first time, in a new USD$2 billion package to be unveiled this week.

  • The package is expected to include Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), which have a range of 150 km but the package will stop short of providing the ATACMS missile systems (range 300kms) requested by Kyiv.
  • The announcement is expected to come ahead of ahead of a major EU summit in Ukraine on Friday Feb 3 to be attended by European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell.
  • The EU delegation plans to say that “the future of Ukraine and its citizens lies within the European Union," but will decline to commit to a timeline amid divergent views on Ukraine EU accession.
  • There are also lingering concerns over the future of US aid to Ukraine as a Pew Research Center report shows 40% of Republican-leaning voters now say that the US is doing “too much” to support Ukraine.
