US To Host Quad Summit In September: Kyodo

Japan's Kyodo News reporting that Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will travel to the US in September to take part in a Quad Summit involving the heads of gov't of Japan, the United States, Australia, and India. This will be the first in-person meeting of Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) participants since the pandemic started.

  • Meeting comes at the behest of the US gov't as it seeks to focus foreign and security policy in Asia-Pacific, and in particular to counter the influence of China in the region.
  • Summit likely to take place on or around 24 September, with Indian PM Narendra Modi in Washington, D.C. for his first meeting with President Biden on 23 September.
