USDCAD Climbs Towards 50-Day EMA After Clearing Week’s High

CANADA
  • USDCAD has seen a strong increase to ~1.344 as equities continue their slide (-0.9%) to more than offset further strong gains for WTI (+3%).
  • The pair earlier punched through initial resistance at 1.3415 (Jan 9 high) and now takes a step closer to a firmer 1.3460 (50-day EMA).
  • There doesn’t appear to be much impact from a narrowing in Can-US yield differentials although CAD does outperform AUD.
  • Specifically, front GoCs have seen a sizeable ~3bp of underperformance since US CPI despite the slightly stronger than expected core CPI print, pushing the Can-US 2Y differential to -30bps at what would be a fresh high for a close since Oct 20.
