USTR Raise Issues Over Energy Policies

MEXICO
  • Mexico has adopted numerous administrative and regulatory actions that discriminate against private investors in the energy industry and violate the USMCA, Republican Rep. Kevin Brady says in a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai. (BBG)
    • Brady urged deputy USTR Jayme White to raise the issue in meetings with Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday.
    • White then told Mexican undersecretary of economy for trade that Mexico needs to make it a priority to have energy policies that promote fair competition and renewable energy production to combat climate change.
  • Released overnight - Mexican Economy Lost 312.9k Jobs in December. This compared with 165.5k jobs created the previous month.
    • For reference, President AMLO had made prior comments that jobs fell from Nov as cos. evaded Dec. bonuses.
  • Mexico has registered consecutive daily record increases of new Covid-19 cases, with 44,187 being reported on Wednesday. President AMLO is not expected back at the daily press conference until at least Monday as he quarantines having contracted the virus for a second time.
