USTR, UK Trade Min To Hold Presser After Two Days Of Talks

INTERNATIONAL TRADE

US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and UK Secretary of State for International Trade Anne-Marie Trevelyan will hold a press conference this afternooon following two days of trade talks.

  • Presser set for 1430ET (1830GMT, 1930CET).
  • Comes after the two yesterday toured the Port of Baltimore, the US' largest port facility for specialised cargo (roll-on/roll-off ships) and passenger facilities.
  • On the major issue of steel and aluminium tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, an unnamed senior USTR official stated that “I will say that we’re making progress. And we’re hopeful,” but did not go into specifics.
  • UK papers a lot more positive on the prospect. Politico reported this morning that "The U.S. is set to ditch 25 percent tariffs on British steel as soon as today, the Sun’s Kate Ferguson and the Mail’s John Stevens [...]. [Trevelyen] tells both papers that the Biden administration’s position has changed and that there are now hopes for a full-blown US trade deal before the next election."
  • No talks on sensitive issue of agricultural products during these meetings.
