LATAM: VENEZUELA-Trump Envoy To Meet Maduro Today: CNN

LATAM

CNN reports that US President Donald Trump's envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, is set to meet with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduo on a visit to the country today. The two are set to discuss migrant deportation flights, among other issues.

  • The meeting comes two days after newly confirmed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revoked a Biden-era decision that gave up to 600k Venezuelans living in the US Temporary Protected Status. AP: "Noem has until Saturday [1 Feb] to decide what to do about the group whose protections expire in April and until July 12 for those whose protections expire in September. If she does nothing, the protections automatically extend for another six months."
  • The US does not maintain diplomatic relations with Venezuela. The Grenell meeting is set to be the first time Maduro has met with a senior US official since senior Biden administration officials travelled to Caracas in 2022.
  • Grenell's meeting comes as President Trump threatens Canada and Mexico with 25% tariffs on imports. It is unclear if oil will come into these measures, but on 30 Jan Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly laid out a potential impact, saying to the FT "We ship oil at a discount which is, ultimately, refined in Texas. If it’s not us, it is Venezuela,” Joly said, referring to the heavy grades of oil produced in Venezuela and Canada on which many American refineries depend. “There’s no other option on the table, and this administration doesn’t want to work with Venezuela,” Joly said."
