Vice President Harris To Meet With Teamsters Boss

US

Vice President Harris will meet with Teamsters President Sean O’Brien on September 16, the first such meeting since the Biden-Harris switch.

  • O’Brien has so-far declined to endorse either Biden or Harris and took the unusual step of speaking at the Republican National Convention in July, an apparent effort to balance the union’s historic support for Democrats with an increasingly Trump-curious rank-and-file membership.
  • O'Brien told CBS yesterday, he was holding off on an endorsement because he hadn't yet met with Harris: "Our union is a lot different than most unions. We represent 1.3 million members. Half of our members are Republicans, half of our members are Democrats, so we have to serve all of our membership equally. Look, everybody has a different style of leadership. We want the opportunity to sit down with Vice President Harris."
  • O’Brien said in a statement on X: “Our members are the backbone of this nation, working in all 50 states and representing every political background. We look forward to having a conversation on the direction of the country and the issues that matter to working people.”
  • According to figures compiled by MNI, there are 190,740 Teamsters and affiliated union members in Pennsylvania, 59,777 in Michigan, 27,371 in North Carolina, and 15,788 in Georgia. The PA and MI membership numbers suggest that an endorsement could be consequential if the election is as close as projected by polling.
