EMISSIONS: Volkswagen Sees EU 2025 Emissions Target as Major Challenge

EMISSIONS

Volkswagen says achieving the emissions target for both cars and vans in the EU in 2025 is a major challenge, amid changes in general market trends and state subsidies. It aims to achieve the 2030 target.

  • Volkswagen’s new cars fleet in Europe emitted an average of 118 g CO2/km (WLTP) in 2024, lower than the EU target of 115gCO2/km.
  • Volkswagen ’s new vans fleet in Europe emitted an average of 190 g CO2/km (WLTP) in 2024, lower than the EU target of 195 g CO2/km.
  • Despite hitting the 2024 target, it said meeting the emissions target of 49.5 g CO2/km for cars and 153,9 g CO2/km for vans in 2025 will be challenging.
  • For the years 2020-2024, the EU emissions target for new passenger car is set at 95g CO2/km (NEDC), equivalent to around 115gCO2/km (WLTP); for commercial vehicles is set at 147g CO2/km (NEDC), equivalent to around 195gCO2/km (WLTP), according to EEA.
  • It will aim to meet the 2030 target of 49.5 g CO2/km for cars and 90,6 g CO2/km for vans.
  • The EC announced its car action plan last week with which it plans to give more flexible compliance to automakers and their CO2 emissions, by extending the compliance period to three years instead of one year.
