Von Der Leyen Heads to Baku for EU Gas Deal

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is headed for Baku, Azerbaijan today in search of alternative gas supplies to replace Russian flows.

  • "President von der Leyen and (Energy) Commissioner Kadri Simson will be tomorrow in Azerbaijan to further strengthen the cooperation." The Commission said on Twitter yesterday.
  • "Amid Russia's continued weaponisation of its energy supplies, diversification of our energy imports is a priority for the EU," von der leyen said on Twitter.
  • An EU draft document seen by news outlets last week said the EU was proposing a gas deal with Azerbaijan and would support the expansion of a pipeline to facilitate the deal.
