AUSTRALIA

A Newspoll done for The Australian reports that only 13% of those surveyed believe that last week’s budget won’t be inflationary. 33% said that the decisions will be good for the economy (October 29%) and 20% expect to be “better off”, despite $14bn of cost-of-living relief.

  • Voters’ preferences have changed slightly following the budget with the centre-right Coalition rising 1pp to 34% and the incumbent Labor party steady at 38%. This has resulted in the two-party preferred result narrowing to 55% to 45% from 56:44.
  • 28% believe that the budget will be “bad” for the economy. 39% believe it will make inflation “worse” (with 57% for Coalition supporters) and 33% think it will make “no difference”. 49% did not think that the Coalition would have delivered a “better Budget”.
  • Satisfaction with PM Albanese rose 4pp to 57% and +3pp to 36% for Coalition leader Dutton. Albanese remains the preferred PM +2pp to 56% with Dutton +1pp to 29%.
