Vox Enters Regional Gov't For First Time, Feijoo Set To Take Over PP

SPAIN

The right-wing nationalist Vox party is set to enter the gov't of the Spanish autonomous community of Castile and Leon in a landmark moment for the party. Vox reached a deal with the centre-right People's Party (PP) on 10 March to officially enter a coalition, with reports that the party could take the regional vice-presidency. In the February regional election the PP came first but fell short of a majority, requiring outside support to prop up the gov't.

  • Vox has supported PP-led gov'ts in other regions previously, but from the outside in a confidence-and-supply arrangement. This move to officially include Vox in gov't could prove the breaking of the 'cordon sanitaire' around Vox in future coalition talks.
  • The PP remains in a state of disarray at the national level, with the Castile and Leon election and its fallout presaging the resignation of party head Pablo Casado.
  • Following Casado's resignation, President of the Regional Gov't of Galicia Alberto Núñez Feijóo was the only candidate to recieve the requisite number of supporting signatures to run for the PP leadership, meaning he will be proclaimed the next national leader at the PP Congress starting 1 April.
  • Nationwide opinion polling shows Vox now neck-and-neck with the PP vying for second place behind PM Pedro Sanchez's centre-left Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). Should be noted that PP could recover once Feijoo takes the helm. A 3 March poll showed the prospective leader with a 9-point advantage over Sanchez in approval ratings, with 49% of respondents approving of Feijoo compared to 40% for Sanchez.
