War Effort Adding to Labour Shortage; Macroeconomic Data on the Docket

  • President Putin’s drive to expand Russia’s armed forces is adding to labour shortages, Bloomberg report. Federal Statistics Service data suggest a net increase in the military last year of approximately 400,000 amid already record-low unemployment, Bloomberg Economics estimates, after Putin ordered the call-up of 300,000 reservists. The Kremlin is now seeking 400,000 more contract recruits this year to fight in Ukraine as Putin digs in for a long fight, according to people familiar with the plan.
  • Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolay Patrushev arrived in India on a working visit on Wednesday, TASS news service reports. "In New Delhi, Nikolay Patrushev is taking part in an annual meeting of security council secretaries from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organizaiton," the press service of the Council’s administration said.
  • A slew of macroeconomic data is on the docket today, including: current account balance data (Prior: $31.4b), industrial production data (Est: -1.5% y/y), retail sales data (Est: -8.0% y/y) and the unemployment rate (Prior: 3.6%). All data crosses at 1700BST/1900 local time.
