Warsaw March Sees Staunch Support for Tusk’s Opposition

  • Head of the opposition Donald Tusk, former European Council President, led a march through Warsaw this weekend, commemorating the anniversary of the first free elections in Poland in 1989. Various reports cite 500,000 demonstrators on the march – a strong showing for the opposition ahead of elections in Autumn. Latest polling sees the opposition Civic Platform polling at 27.2% (up 1.5ppts) against the Law & Justice Party’s 32.8% (up 0.5ppts), according to DGP.
  • Leaders of both the regional bank BGK and ING’s Poland arm have made a call for special laws to overrule the conversion of CHF loans to PLN in order to limit legal risks, according to a piece in PB this weekend.
  • The NBP’s two-day rate-setting meeting begins today, with the base rate announcement due tomorrow. Rates are expected unchanged at 6.75%.
