Weekly LNG Imports to Japan and China Increase as EU Imports Drift Lower

LNG

Natural gas prices in Europe and Asian remain weak but the total volume of global LNG imports rose last week due to higher demand from Japan and China. The total volume of global LNG imports increased 20% (1.4m metric tons) in the week 8-14 May to 8.4m metric tons according to Bloomberg.

  • Deliveries into Japan-Korea-mainland China-Taiwan region (JKCT) increased the most by 1m metric tons, mostly due to higher imports into Japan and Mainland China post holidays.
  • NW Europe and Italy saw imports almost flat week-on-week although total European sendout has been slowly declining from a peak in late April. Sendout was at 435mcm/d on 14 May compared to a peak of 537mcm/d on 24 April.
  • Week demand in Europe and Asia has resulted in a surge in LNG at sea since March with volumes at 3.49m metric tons on 14 May.
  • The JKM-TTF front month spread has edged higher over the last week, due to the decline in TTF prices, with JKM now at a 0.76$/mmbtu premium to TTF. The spreads for the remaining summer months are holding the premium to TTF.
    • TTF JUN 23 down -0.6% at 32.13€/MWh
    • NBP JUN 23 down -0.3% at 74.25p/th
