What to Watch: WTI Option Expiry

ENERGY
  • The latest Baker Hughes rig count data is due for release at 18:00BST. Last week the oil rig count was at 597 and gas rigs at 153 with the gradual increase expected to continue with an increase in oil rigs to 600. Rigs counts have been increasing since late 2020 and both gas and oil production are slowly following the trend over the same time period.
  • The ICE and Nymex commitment of traders reports will be released after the close today at 18:30BST and 15:30EST. The bullish bets across all main oil markets have reduced over recent weeks as recessionary risks have increased and as high fuel pump prices have started to show an impact on demand.
  • Also due today is the Aug22 WTI option expiry against the 19:30BST future close price. Current open interest shows the biggest nearby interest is in the 95$/bbl strike but bigger exposure sits at 100$/bbl if crude continues to recover upwards.
