White House NSC Kirby To Brief Press

US

White House National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby is shortly due to brief the press following a consequential day of diplomatic engagements between EU leaders and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

  • Livestream: https://www.whitehouse.gov/live/
  • The approach taken in China by French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen diverges from a US-led drive to de-couple from China.
  • Von der Leyen and Macron both warned of the risk of de-coupling and stressed the importance of maintaining economic ties.
  • Noah Barkin at Rhodium tweets: "Interesting difference between Macron and Von der Leyen's messages to Xi: both reject full decoupling but while Von der Leyen stresses need to reduce risks, Macron emphasises need to reduce barriers to trade & investment. No trace of de-risking."
  • Kirby may also provide comment on President Xi's claim he will hold a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky soon.
  • Kirby may also provide additional details of President Biden's trip to Ireland and the United Kingdom next week.
