White House: Our Posture Has Not Changed, No Negotiations Over Debt Ceiling

US

White House Principle Deputy Press Secretary Olivia Dalton has told reporters that the White House has not changed its "posture" and there will be "no negotiations [with Republicans] over the debt ceiling."

  • Dalton says that Congress must act to raise the debt ceiling without conditions, consistent with messaging from the White House over the past week.
  • Dalton's remarks come in response to a question on whether Senator Joe Manchin's (D-WV) comments today may signal a Democrat willingness to strike a compromise with Republicans.
  • Manchin said today at the World Economic Forum: “[House Speaker] Kevin McCarthy [R-CA], it’s a wonderful opportunity for him to say ‘Listen, let’s act like the adults. We’ve got a debt — whose at fault, we’re all at fault. How do we fix it together and move forward?”
  • Manchin: “...we will make this deal, we’ll raise the debt ceiling if you allow us to give the American people a look of what we’re dealing with.”
  • Republicans are working on legislation, slated for early April, which will formalise "debt prioritisation," allowing the government to pay obligations without raising the debt limit.
