FRANCE
FRANCE: With PM Philippe's resignation (see 0834BST bullet) speculation now
surrounds who could replace him and his gov't. Announcement expected in the
coming hours.
- From Elysee statement: "Mr Edouard Philippe has handed in the resignation of
the government to the president of the republic, who has accepted it. He will
ensure, with the members of the government, the management of current operations
until the nomination of the new government," meaning Philippe will remain in
post until a new gov't is formed.
- A Cabinet reshuffle had been widely expected, with President Macron seeking to
reinvigorate his presidency, stung by low approval ratings, in the wake of the
COVID-19 crisis and the gillets jaunes protests.
- Philippe, prior to joining Macron's En Marche party was a member of the
centre-right Les Republicains. Macron could appoint a more centrist PM to try to
broaden his base of support.
- The move comes with risk. During COVID-19 crisis Philippe's stock has risen in
public eye. To replace a popular PM could see Macron's support decline further.
